Storm2 now available from Verizon for those who waited

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 7:46 am

Assuming RIM and Verizon didn’t completely scorch the earth of prospective touch-screen BlackBerry buyers, some of you might like to know that Verizon’s Storm2 9550 is now ready for purchase. As expected, the Storm2 will cost you $180 after $100 on-line discount and after you prostrate yourself to a two-year tithe. Sorry original Storm owners, neither Verizon nor RIM are offering you any kind of appeasement for your early troubles — remember, according to RIM buggy smartphones are the new reality.

Android 2.0 support officially added to SDK

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 1:52 pm

Google’s gone ahead and uncorked the bubbly to celebrate the launch of Android 2.0 “Eclair” today ahead of Verizon’s big reveal tomorrow, bundling its announcements into two very important sections: SDK support, meaning devs can go ahead and start targeting the new bits, and a comprehensive list of changes in the latest version. Here are the major changes us lay folk are going to care about:

  • Support for multiple Google and Exchange accounts
  • Third-party “sync adapters” allow apps to tie in to the phone’s sync services
  • Quick contact menus for fast access to specific key pieces of contact information
  • Unified email inbox (yes!)
  • SMS and MMS search
  • Text message auto-delete after a user-defined thread size is reached
  • Significantly improved camera controls with white balance, macro, effects, and more
  • Improved keyboard layout, dictionary, and algorithm based on multi-touch support
  • Double-tap zoom in browser, support for HTML5
  • Bluetooth 2.1 support with addition of OPP and PBAP profiles
  • “Better” graphics hardware acceleration

Needless to say, we’re extremely excited about the changes Google’s made here — and on top of the Droid, we can only hope this action is coming to legacy devices on the double. We’ll find out soon enough (hopefully). Check a video of 2.0 in action after the break!

Nokia’s first TD-SCDMA-based 6788 ready for China Mobile’s 500 million subscribers

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 7:26 am

Nokia might be hemorrhaging smartphone marketshare to North America’s meddling upstarts but it still dominates in total handsets sold worldwide. Today’s news can only help that cause as Nokia taps into China’s homegrown TD-SCDMA 3G marketplace for the first time. The Nokia 6788 does the honor via collaboration with China Mobile, China’s (and the world’s) largest mobile phone operator. The handset itself brings a 2.8-inch QVGA display, 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and dual-LED flash, 4GB of memory plus microSD expansion, GPS, 3.5mm headset jack, and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, all riding atop S60 3rd Edition — not 5th as we’re accustomed to seeing by now. Unfortunately, it won’t start contributing to Nokia’s sagging bottom-line until the end of December.

Sense UI update for HTC Magic makes the scene in Taiwan

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joseph L. Flatley @ 6:04 pm
If our ability to guesstimate Chinese website contents based on sketchy machine translation software is correct, it looks like HTC Magic owners in Taiwan are finally getting that Sense UI update they’ve been teased with since mid-August. Further blurring the lines between the aforementioned handset and the Hero, it is unknown whether or not the update will ever come to carriers besides Chunghwa Telecom, or how long that could even take. One thing we are fairly certain of, however, is that phones “with Google” will probably remain without this update, into perpetuity. Sorry, myTouch! If you’re one of the lucky few, hit that read link to get started.

HTC Dragon coming to Verizon as the Passion?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Nilay Patel @ 1:21 pm

We’ve been hearing about a 1GHz Snapdragon-based Android handset called the HTC Dragon ever since the HD2 came out, but now it looks like some pieces are falling into place — apparently this mystery HTC set we spotted over the weekend is a CDMA version of the Dragon headed for Verizon as the HTC Passion sometime in Q4. Apparently Verizon’s trying to unify the hardware UI of its Droid lineup, which is why the Motorola Droid, the HTC Droid Eris, and the Passion share a set of buttons along the bottom edge of the screen, and some people are also claiming that the white notification bar is further sign of similarity. As for us, well, we’ll wait to hear more before we start to get too excited — and we can’t help but wonder if this thing will run Sense or stock Android 2.0 when it hits, as HTC’s big new ad push is all about personalization. Still, it’s looking like a hell of a year for Android (and Verizon), no?

And here we go: at 9AM CT, or 10AM in New York City where the real Americans live, Sprint will be making public its plans for the Palm Pixi. You know, Palm’s 2nd smartphone to run its lauded WebOS platform. The announcement should bring pricing and availability so check back then ya hear. If you’re lucky, we even might get some Verizon news too.

[Thanks, Jocelyn]

T-Mobile officially unveils $99 Even More, $79 Even More Plus plans and equipment installment option

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ross Miller @ 12:14 pm

Right on schedule with the whispers, T-Mobile lifted the veil off of its new price plan tier structure, Even More and Even More Plus, and from the looks of it all those leaks were pretty much spot-on. The traditional Even More plan is a two-year commitment and discounted phone, with unlimited individual prices starting at $59 per month and going up to $99 if you want unlimited messaging and text, too. Even More Plus scrapes the device discount but offers unlimited individual prices at $49 for voice / $79 for everything. It looks like the only major differentiator is the subsidized handset, but here’s where the numbers don’t add up: even with the steep $350 discount on myTouch 3G, factoring in that $20 premium would pay for the phone during the 18th month, leaving six months and $120 of extra payments left that have no obvious justification to us. Additionally the FlexPay / equipment installment plan is now available, letting you break up the cost of your phone into interest-free monthly bills. It seems Even More’s subsidized phones are offered over four installments (e.g. $37 per month for the $150 MyTouch 3G) while Even More Plus’ is two installments (e.g. $25 per month for the same device at the $500 full price). Our initial takeaway from the price tiers is that T-Mobile is doing what it can to drive its consumers away from the traditional and over to the non-traditional (for US, at least) Even More Plus plan, but hey, we’re not gonna argue over a beneficial contract-free plan, even if monthly phone payments keep us paying the company for at least 20 months. So T-Mo, any other Project Dark surprises in the cards? Inquiring minds want to know.

Ukraine war memorial given eternal LED torch, cell antenna

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ross Miller @ 7:43 am

An eternal flame that once blazed via good old fashioned science has now been given a new lease on life thanks to modern technology. This Cherkassy, Ukraine war monument, erected in honor of fallen World War 2 soldiers, had been sitting extinguished given the price of natural gas after the fall of the Soviet Union. Now, though, the bowl has been gifted with a LED marquee simulating a flame, which covers up its alternate use as a cell tower. Sure, beauty’s in the eye of the beholder and we’re fairly certain this hasn’t been accepted with universal approval, but if you ask us, and admittedly we’re biased, the more LEDs the better.

BlackBerry Storm update landing tomorrow, bringing lots of good stuff

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 12:01 pm

Hey, you — yeah you, the BlackBerry Storm owner over there. You listening? Good. That mythical software update we heard about just last week is obviously the real deal, and a screen grab from Verizon’s internal systems has shown up to prove it. We’re told that it should go live tomorrow (that’s October 25th for those in strange, potentially illegitimate time zones) at 6PM. On the whole, it’ll make your Storm act a lot more like the forthcoming Storm2, but specifically you can expect a “faster, more accurate and more natural text input experience, word completion, a virtual QWERTY keyboard in portrait view and enhanced sensitivity when editing, copying and pasting.” You’ll also get the ability to “enable Auto Correction as opposed to Word Completion in landscape view.” The full changelog should be coming soon, so hang tight! Oh, and cancel those plans for tomorrow night, okay?

[Thanks, Anonymous]

Verizon’s Droid is a series, not just a phone; Droid Eris coming from HTC

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 8:41 pm

We just got some wild information from a trusted source about Verizon’s Android strategy, and let’s just say this shakes things up a little bit. Here are the big takeaways:

  • Droid is the brand name being applied to Verizon’s Android devices. It isn’t a single phone.
  • The Sholes — the phone we’ve been calling the Droid so far — may simply be known as the Droid.
  • HTC’s Desire will be coming to market as the “Droid Eris.” (Allow us to save you the Wikipedia lookup — Eris is the Greek goddess of strife.) Interestingly, it’s already up on gdgt as such.
  • Droid Eris will be released — not announced, actually released — on November 6. In all likelihood, it will not be announced or shown at Verizon’s October 28 event — that will probably just be for the Sholes.

That’s all we’ve got so far, but it’s a heck of a change in plans, isn’t it? It’s interesting that Verizon will be applying a sub-brand to its Android line — and a pretty solid sign that Big Red’s got a serious commitment to the platform going forward.
