Switched On: iPhone 3GS is fine, young, but not a cannibal

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ross Rubin @ 2:03 pm

Ross Rubin (@rossrubin) contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

At least since the advent of the first camera phones, people have been wondering whether the cell phone would limit the opportunity for all kinds of other products, particularly portable electronics. Even the more pedestrian features of basic cell phones have been blamed for the declines in (or at least limiting the market for) pagers, Family Radio Service (FRS) radios, and even watches. And beyond portable electronics, cordless phones have also been in a state of decline for years as more consumers cut the cord.

But the iPhone 3GS has renewed the old debate for a number of reasons, including data that shows that iPhone users are disproportionately inclined to use their phone’s advanced features and changes in the hardware and software that improve the digital camera, add video capture, and open the door to in-vehicle turn-by-turn navigation. TomTom, which has returrned to its roots by demonstrating navigation software for the third-party hardware of the original iPhone 3G, can now offer that software through Apple’s App Store. So, will the iPhone shutter Canon, run Garmin off the road, or make Flip flop? Thankfully, for the sake of all wishing to avoid reading headlines containing these atrocious puns, not for the foreseeable future, at least in the U.S.

iPhone 3GS exploit confirmed, jailbreak and unlock coming ’soon’

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 2:47 am
And so it continues. Geohot has returned with some help from hacking buddies chronic, posixninja, and pod2g with news that the same “24kpwn” exploit used to cracked open the iPod touch 2G will work on the iPhone 3GS. That means a jailbreak and unlock can be launched just as soon as the existing tools are updated for the iPhone 3GS (which won’t be long). As George Hotz laments,

On a personal note, I’m sad. Apple, it took me a week to break through your new defenses. And to let us reuse an exploit like that; 24kpwn was so 5 months ago. Although I imagine it must have been painful watching the devices roll by on the assembly line, knowing they all had a hole in them and you couldn’t fix it.

Oh George.

Apple pulls adult-content app from App Store, anyone surprised?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Nilay Patel @ 2:27 pm

And just like that, the iPhone App Store is once again safe for children, people at work, and those who enjoy the iron fist of an anonymous application reviewer gently controlling their hardware / software ecosystem. Yep, the “Hottest Girls” application has been yanked after just a few hours of availability, and it’s no secret why: although the app was clearly labeled and approved under iPhone OS 3.0’s app rating and parental control guidelines, naked-ladies-on-the-iPhone was quickly becoming too much news for Apple’s squeaky-clean image to bear. Of course, that once again prompts us to remind everyone that this exact same content is easily accessible through any number of applications on the iPhone, like, say, Safari, and that the App Store’s arbitrary and capricious review procedures are an incredible liability to an otherwise dominant platform, but honestly, no one’s listening because they’d rather talk about boobs. Good work.

Update:
Interesting — the dev’s site now says that Hottest Girls has been “pulled” because their servers were “reaching their limits” and that the app will be back up soon, naughty pictures intact. We’re guessing that means their image servers, but we’ll see how if this app or others like it make a reappearance anytime soon.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

iPhone 3GS PlayStation, Game Boy Advance emulators demoed on video

Filed under: Uncategorized — Nilay Patel @ 11:46 am

A final iPhone 3GS jailbreak hasn’t been released yet, but that isn’t stopping enterprising hackers from trying to get at all that extra horsepower, and some of the first notable hacks we’ve seen are these updated PlayStation 1 and Game Boy Advance emulator ports, which run way faster than the versions for the original and 3G. The revved up hardware in Apple’s latest is apparently capable of running either of these at 150 - 225fps with zero frameskipping, which is pretty impressive. Of course, we’ll be way more impressed when the Dev Team releases a 3GS jailbreak and we can hit these up ourselves, but in the meantime there are plenty of videos to with which to while away the time at the read links.

Apple’s App Store approves first explicit content, Anita Bryant races to Cincinnati

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 4:22 am

After all the cases of benign apps being rejected on grounds of “objectionable content,” the first outright application featuring jiggly bits has made it to the App Store. How could this happen? Easy, Apple’s shift in policy is made possible by the parental controls included in the iPhone OS 3.0 — you know, so you can parent instead of Apple. Hopefully this brings an end to arbitrary App Store rejections and begins a new era of fire and brimstone threats of eternal damnation.

Video: Nokia N97 gets a torture testing, goes great with milk

If the opinions of two star-crossed bloggers weren’t enough to sway you firmly into either the “yea” or “nay” column regarding a Nokia N97 purchase, perhaps seeing how it fares after being dunked into a bowl of corn flakes will help you make up your mind. N97Geeks.com has gone the ‘ol torture test route, including of a series of scratch attempts for the screen and the body as well, plus the aforementioned test where it became a part of This Complete Breakfast. The result was an almost fully functional if slightly scuffed up handset that now has a non-working menu key and a wee bit of internal condensation, meaning you can probably get by without a screen protector or case if you hate buying accessories. But, for best results, keep this one clear of your Kellogg’s.

HTC Hero details begin leaking from HTC’s own website

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 6:29 am

As we prepare for HTC’s official launch event today, we’re starting to see some details appear on HTC’s own website of the much rumored Hero. Through some URL trickery, we’ve managed to unearth several details that confirm the previous rumors. Hero includes the new HTC Sense widget-based interface that puts at-a-glance info right up front on the home screen where it belongs. A new Scenes profile feature lets you transform your phones focus from business to weekend mode. Viewing your contacts shows the usual data in addition to the interactions you’ve had through social networking status updates and photos from the likes of Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. A dedicated search button searches the phone as well as services like Twitter. In fact, like Palm’s Pre, the HTC Hero seems ready to fully integrate your local data with all your subscribed social media sites. The big unveiling is just about an hour away, until then, have a poke around HTC’s Hero site yourself by hitting the read link below.

Update: First images are out! More after the break. Inside you’ll find Qualcomm’s MSM7200A proc running Android at 528MHz, 512MB/288MB ROM/RAM, 3.2-inch TFT-LCD with 320 x 480 pixel rez, 900/2100MHz HSPA and Quad-band GSM, trackball, GPS, 802.11b/g WiFi, 3.5mm audio jack, G-sensor, compass, and 5 megapixel auto-focus cam with microSD expansion. ColorWare outs custom colors for the Apple iPhone 3GS

Filed under: Uncategorized — Laura June @ 2:51 pm

If you’re anything at all like us, you were just a tad disappointed by the color “options” of Apple’s newest foray into the world of mobile phones, the iPhone 3GS. After all, who wants to be limited to just black and white these days? Not us, that’s for sure — and ColorWare’s just announced a fix for all that. Pricing for these customs jobs runs $150 for the back of the handset, $20 a piece for the bezel frame and button, and $15 the SIM holder. They’ll also do up your earbuds for an additional $15. A small price to pay for beauty, no? Another shot of a different color combo after the break.

Intel making ‘important announcement’ today — a Nokia netbook / MID?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 5:29 am

Possible big news on the way later today. According to Bloomberg, Intel’s very own Mr. MID, Anand Chandrasekher, will announce Nokia as a new customer of its mobile processors. This is important because Nokia is a long time friend of ARM and Intel by its own admission can’t currently compete with ARM when it comes to the ultra-low power consumption requirements of smartphones. So whatever Nokia’s got cooking will presumably be running on Intel’s upcoming Moorestown MID platform or its ultra-low power Medfield silicon targeting mainstream smartphones in 2011. On the other hand, Nokia’s CEO already expressed interest in entering the laptop race with Intel or the ARM-based Snapdragon rumored to be at the core. But if this announcement results in yet another Atom-based netbook, well, good luck with that Nokia.

Apple moves one million iPhone 3G S units in a weekend — just in time for Steve’s return

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joshua Topolsky @ 10:08 am

Worried that Apple might not be doing so well? Concerned the company will have to start breaking open the collective piggy banks to keep the lights on? Well rest easy, friends, as the folks in Cupertino have just issued a compelling piece of PR that will surely put your mind at ease — one stating it managed to move a million iPhone 3G S units over the weekend. That’s right, in a fashion not completely dissimilar to last year’s iPhone 3G launch (though with far less hiccups), bucketloads of happy buyers flooded Apple’s coffers with sweet, delicious cash money for the new smartphone. The buying frenzy was apparently even exciting enough to rouse recovering CEO Steve Jobs from his convalescent state. The seemingly-now-returned honcho is quoted (for the first time in months) in the press release as saying “Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning.” Winning indeed Steve… and welcome back.
