Hyundai’s B-490i Dolphin cellphone is ridiculously clever

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 5:59 am

You know, when we first read the image-less text describing Hyundai’s dolphin-shaped cellphone, our instinctual, caffeine-injected reflex was to launch into an angst-ridden assault on the MB-490i. Then we saw the pictures and, well, dammit, we kind of like it. Somehow Hyundai managed to make the aquatic scroll-wheel on the front mirrored by cascading waves of aluminum along the backside work. Even the pale blue eyeball on the side comes across as tasteful without kitsch. Spec-wise, we’re looking at a 240 x 400 touchscreen display augmented by a swipeable touchscreen surface below, a 2.0 megapixel camera (no flash), Yamaha speaker, Bluetooth, and a €250 price tag when it launches in May. Check the pictures after the break and sound-off in the comments with your opinion.

Samsung Memoir hands-on

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 12:25 am

Is the world ready for consumer-class 8 megapixel cameraphones? That’s a loaded question, but one way or another, T-Mobile’s about to find out now that its SGH-T929 Memoir from Samsung is in the marketplace. With a full touchscreen and support for that elusive 1700MHz HSDPA, the handset packs some serious heat at the top end of the featurephone heap, and we’ve now had a chance to put it through its paces. Read on for video, pictures, and — for the literate types out here — even a few words about Samsung’s mighty 3264 x 2448 worth of handset muscle.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXV: the world-renowned GiPhone F5

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joseph L. Flatley @ 9:27 pm

Whoever put together GiPhone F5 seems to have done a pretty good job of mimicking the iPhone’s UI, but other than that the deets are rather sketchy. This bad boy seems to be a 3G handset with a capacitive 3.2-inch multitouch screen, Bluetooth, “kinds of games,” and up to 16GB internal memory. Sounds wonderful, sure, but don’t give up your HiPhone just yet — we’re still trying to figure out where this one is available, and at what price. Video after the break.

Mini microphone spruces up voice recording possibilities on iPhone / iPods

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 10:22 am

Not that this is the very first microphone designed to function with Apple’s iPhone or anything, but it’s certainly amongst the cheapest and most universal that we’ve seen. The Mini Microphone reportedly plays nice with the iPhone 3G, iPod touch and iPod nano, giving ‘em all that extra special voice recording oomph that’s so badly needed. The best part(s)? It’s only $14.99, and it’s barely bigger than a valve stem cover to boot.

[Thanks, Junior]

LG’s G910 watchphone to cost £1,000?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 6:11 am

Know what comes with exclusivity? Price gouging. Word has it that Orange’s little European exclusive on LG’s touch-screen G910 watchphone with HSDPA data will result in a £1,000 / €1,144 price per. That directly translates to about $1,500 but, as these things generally go, it will likely be priced closer to $1,000 (without tax) whenever it lands Stateside. With contract, however, you’ll be handing over £500 and then £40 per month for what we suspect will be the next two years. Such is the life of the early adopter.

The Engadget Interview: Ralph de la Vega, CEO of AT&T Mobility

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 1:00 pm

We had an opportunity to sit down with AT&T’s Ralph de la Vega last week — one of the most influential individuals in the wireless world today — at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona for a nice little chat covering all the topics that have been burning in our minds the last few months: Android, the Pre, LTE, and more. Read on!

T-Mobile USA goes live with $50 unlimited voice plans in San Francisco

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 6:22 am

We heard that T-Mobile USA was looking to dabble in the low-end arena with $50 unlimited voice plans, and sure enough, the carrier has gone live with ‘em in the City by the Bay. In a surprise move aimed to rival similar plans from lesser known providers such as Boost Mobile, T-Mob is offering “loyal customers” the option to move to a $50 flat-rate calling plan. In order to get the offer, you must be located in San Francisco (for now, anyway), have been a subscriber in good standing for at least 22 months and want to save a few bucks on your mobile calling. It’s stated that stores in the SF area are actively promoting the new plan, which should be fairly successful given that users won’t have to extend their current contracts in order to switch. Toss in unlimited texting, data and Everlasting Gobstoppers, and we’re sold.

Conduit mobile phone concept is about 40 years early

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 1:25 am

As much as we adore this concept, we’re not even remotely hopeful something like this will become a reality within the next score or so. That said, we’d love to be proven wrong, as the Conduit is quite possibly the most fantastic phone design to ever be conceived. With a hint of steampunk, a dash of Star Trek and a splash of ergonomic appreciation, this here mobile can be collapsed into a pocket-friendly form or expanded into a bona fide video phone. Hit up the read link for a few more looks, and feel free to give these designers a chunk of capital to make our dreams come true.

LG Versa finds its way out of a Verizon box

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 8:24 pm

At least on this Gregorian calender sitting here in the office, March 1st is still a few days off. True though that may be, it hasn’t stopped at least one LX9600 (or Versa, if you prefer) from getting unboxed from its Verizon Wireless packaging. There’s no indication of what truck this fell off of, nor if these phones may actually go on sale a few days early, but one thing’s for sure — this unboxer definitely did the honors in a high school cafeteria. Classy, no?
