Windows Mobile 6 update for T-Mobile Dash leaked

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ryan Block @ 3:11 pm

Frankly we're a bit surprised it's taken as long as it has for the T-Mobile Dash Windows Mobile 6 upgrade to get leaked. Nothing much to see here if you're at all familiar with WM6 "Standard" (what we common folk are still calling Smartphone), but if you're not willing to brick-risk it, apparently the official update will hit the streets this Friday, the 4th.

Is this a photo from an iPhone?

Filed under:

Repeatedly searching Flickr for the search string "Taken with an Apple iPhone" may not be the average joe's idea of fun, but when it comes to information about the iPhone it seems as if people are willing to do just about anything. Mobile Guerilla had apparently been doing just that for a month, when they struck gold with a Flickr photo (now pulled, but still in Google's cache) called "toast is a powerup" with the exact same text next to a picture of someone eating toast. So far most of the evidence points to this being genuine: the photo is the same resolution as the iPhone's 2-megapixel camera (1600 x 1200 pixels), the EXIF data matches up with an iPhone (i.e. the camera make and model say "Apple iPhone"), and various information online points to the Flickr account holder working at Apple as a "Product Manager". So, if this is real and someone hasn't just altered the EXIF data, how good is the picture quality? Well, it looks like pretty standard fare for a camera phone, although we're sure you can tell us a lot more about the quality of the output than we can.

Intel patent app reveals flexible display fabrication plans

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 10:17 am

No sooner than a furry display patent application surfaces from Philips, it looks like Intel has jumped on the patent-a-random-display bandwagon along with Apple and a few others. Of course, flexible displays have long since been a figment of reality, but the "method of fabricating flexible displays" patent tends to focus more on the snazzy new development methods than the screen itself. Essentially, Intel is looking to use a duo of flexible sheets to sandwich a "number of magnetic display elements" that have "magnetically controllable reflectivity" between the two; furthermore the location of the magnetic particles "with respect to the flexible non-conductive sheets determines the reflectivity of the pixel." The presumably conductive boards would eventually be aiming at cellphones, "portable web browsers," and GPS navigation systems, but considering the head start that quite a few competitors already have, we hope Intel engineers are a bit past the drawing board on this one.

The debacle continues: AT&T pulls LG CU500v, too

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 6:20 pm

So, what web dev over at AT&T is getting a black mark on his next annual review? It seems now that both the Nokia N75 and the LG CU500v have been pulled from AT&T's site following an exciting morning that was shaping up to be one of the more memorable for AT&T subscribers in recent memory. It's one thing to accidentally throw up some generic, low-end flip prematurely, but to taunt us with two groundbreaking (relatively speaking) phones is super uncool. The day's not over, AT&T -- there's still time to repent -- but if the sun goes down with nary an N75 or CU500v order fulfilled, be prepared to deal with the wrath of a thousand fanboys and fangirls.

AT&T botches Nokia N75 launch, pulls from site

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 2:45 pm

Seriously, AT&T, stop playing with our emotions like this. Either you have the N75 available for sale or you don't -- but please, none of this wishy washy "we'll put it up for a little while, then remember that we still don't have any to sell and pull it from the site" business. For a phone this hotly anticipated by the Nokia, Symbian, smartphone, and 3G faithful, you'd like to think that the largest GSM carrier in the United States would run a significantly tighter ship in bringing this one to market, rather than give us a few hours of perceived availability followed by an ominous "Temporarily out of stock" warning in place of the "Add to cart" button.. Bah, who are we kidding? Anyone taking bets on when these things will actually be widely available?

Xda terra becomes first WM6 Pro device to ship

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 2:33 pm

Just over a month ago, O2 Germany came clean and announced the future availability of the Xda terra, and now the carrier will forever hold the crown of being the first major provider to offer up and ship a Windows Mobile 6 Professional handset. Sure enough, O2's Germany webstore proudly displays the dashing mobile, lists the specs that you've already memorized, and mentions that it now includes a two-megapixel camera to boot. Of course, being first in line always comes at a premium, and from what we can gather through the (admittedly sketchy) translation, the lowest price point you'll be reaching is €279.99 ($382) bundled with a contract. Additionally, O2 lists the handset sans agreement for a stiff €519.99 ($710), but it looks like those will only be available from retail locations -- decisions, decisions.

LG CU500v, first Video Share phone, launches on AT&T

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 12:44 pm

Filed under:

Nope, we didn't screw up the image here -- the LG CU500v is, for all practical purposes, identical to the older CU500, save for the critical detail that the CU500v's firmware supports Video Share. We can basically think of the new feature as a poor man's video calling; video is transmitted only one way during calls, though callers with compatible handsets can switch direction mid-call. Rumor has it AT&T intends to launch true video calling along with its HSUPA network, but for the time being, this is as good as it gets. The good news? With a swiveling 1.3 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, stereo speakers, external music controls, stereo Bluetooth, and a slim, metallic body, the phone is no slouch -- and being the first kid on the block with Video Share is only going to run you $29.99 after the typical contract and rebate discounts.

Up next on the FCC spectrum auction block: 700MHz band

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 12:20 pm

Filed under:

We know, jostling over the almighty 700MHz band may not be as exciting as tossing in your bid for the one and only PowerFest '94 cartridge, but for wireless providers and startups alike, this one is big. The FCC has finally announced technical specifications for the upcoming 700MHz band auction, which is being dubbed the "most valuable available slice of radio-frequency spectrum," but are holding out on the anxious bidders by "not deciding exactly how the spectrum will be divided and sold off." The Congressional Budget Office has reckoned that "as much as $15 billion" could be added to the federal treasury as a result of the auction, as the swath of airwaves in the 700MHz range is being "vacated by television broadcasters as they make the transition to digital TV," which makes for "prime territory for providing advanced wireless broadband services." The FCC Chairman was quoted as saying that this auction would hopefully enable a "third pipe to the home" to be constructed in order to provide "affordable broadband to all Americans." If all this sounds interesting, and you've got billions laying around collecting dust, it sounds like you're in for quite the battle come auction time.

Cellphones are dangerous/not dangerous, bee-friendly edition

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 9:44 am

Filed under:

As the saga continues, we've got yet another flip-flopped story rolling through in regard to the toxicity (or not) of cellphones to our environment. Just under a fortnight ago, a report based on an (admittedly lacking) research study claimed that Colony Collapse Disorder within bees was being encouraged by cellphone radiation. As expected, the researchers began living a life filled with Q&A sessions about the data, and now the "truth" is coming out. Essentially, the scientists are claiming that their data was "misinterpreted," and that the study actually looked at DECT phones and base stations, which transmit a "different frequency than mobiles." Furthermore, another member chimed in and boldly stated that their "studies cannot indicate that electromagnetic radiation is a cause of CCD." So that settles it -- until the next round of bickering begins, of course.

Nokia N75 finally launches on AT&T

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ryan Block @ 2:43 am

Filed under:

Hard to believe the day's finally come, but that thing you're looking at is actually Nokia's long, long, freaking long-delayed N75 3G Symbian smartphone. Here. As in, here in America, on AT&T. You don't really need us to tell you what it is (ok, well, if you do: it's got a 2 megapixel camera, PlaysForSure support, Bluetooth, and plenty of media and messaging apps), but you'll be stoked to learn the media-centric flip will run you just $200 (with rebate and 2-year). Grats, AT&T, we were starting to think you didn't have it in you to launch a friggin 3G Symbian phone.
