Ogo2.0 gets picked up by Revol Wireless in U.S.

With Swiss folks getting the new Ogo2.0 recently, it's about time those across the pond get a crack at the new do-everything device. Revol Wireless will get the Ogo2.0 this summer, a perfect fit for the Ohio-based carrier. Revol Wireless prides itself on "unlimited" wireless services and has a target demographic of younger wireless users who, umm, tend to use thousands of text messages every month plus that slew of mobile IMs and a decent torrent of emails to boot. The Ogo2.0 device should fit Revol's strategy perfectly, as the CDMA device has onboard EV-DO (sigh, just Revision 0) and a full QWERTY keyboard for flexing those fingers and thumbs to the limit. Thirsty for more? Try this on for size (takes deep breath): QVGA, Bluetooth 2.0, RSS, Web 2.0 content interface, 2 megapixel cam, voice command, stereo speakers, microSD slot and quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE (for the GSM version announced for Swisscom earlier). Add in a healthy dose of OgoClips (like a bottle opener) and there's very little this pocketable beauty can't do. No word on Revol's pricing, but the Ogo2.0 should drop "this summer" according to the carrier. So, anytime from late June to early late September, eh Revol?

Hands-on with the Samsung Ubicell

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 2:43 pm

While we're all patiently waiting for UMA to go national (any carrier want to step up to the plate here?), Samsung's taking a decidedly different approach to mobile VoIP with its Ubicell product unveiled this week. Carriers are apparently keen on embracing it, too, with Sprint planning on offering it later this year at a to-be-determined price. We had a chance to check it out this morning, and it looks decent enough; it's reasonably small and it won't stand out in most decor (especially if you can just set it next to your wireless router). The craziest feature might be the integrated GPS that -- get this -- locks you out if you try to get all clever and take the Ubicell outside of US territory. In other words, Sprint has no interest running a femtocell in, say, Madagascar.

Samsung’s SPH-M8100: another hi-spec MITs WiBro handheld

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 9:49 am

This isn't the first time we've seen Samsung's SPH-M8100. Remember, this is that crazy WiBro (mobile WiMax) phone sporting a dedicated RSS key (upper-right button on that Korean keypad). Only now, it's been slightly retooled for its official Korean launch. Besides the facelift, it appears unchanged spec-wise as a member of Sammy's elite MITs (Mobile Intelligent Terminal) family of devices. So it still packs the latest CDMA and EV-DO radios and DMB mobile television only now wrapped up in a pretty Windows Mobile 6.0 interface. Bluetooth, 2.8-inch display, and 2 megapixel camera still come standard. With any luck, we might see this rollout on Sprint's WiMAX network someday, somewhere. Yeah, right.

Newton Peripherals ultra-thin MoGo Headset to charge via cellphone

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 8:15 am

Newton Peripherals is no stranger to the world of small and thin. So the miniscule size of their new MoGo Headset -- the "thinnest, lightest headset in the world" -- should come as little surprise. Still, at less than 5-mm thick with 6-hours of talk time and claimed "natural audio" sound, this Bluetooth 2.0 headset does indeed, impress. The headset can be charged in less than an hour via your laptop's PCMCIA or ExpressCard slot -- AC adapter is optional. Uniquely, however, is the tantalizing idea of storing and charging the thin headset via a slot integrated into (or onto) your cellphone (concept pictured above-right). Newton Peripherals is only in "discussions with one of the world's largest manufactures of wireless phones" at this point so who knows when we might see such a solution hit as product. Still, we likey eh Mikey?

LG announces phones with Google, not Google phone

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 5:09 am

LG just announced their plan to pre-install Google services on "millions" of LG cellphones in North America and beyond. So the headline over at Telecoms Korea which reads, "LG to launch Google Phone in Q2" is in fact just Google software and not the magical Google phone touted by the rumor mill. At least this clarifies the comments made by Google's South-East Asia managing director when he stated that Google was "very focused on the software, not the phone." At least 10 new "LG-Google handsets" will start shipping globally in 2007, each with a preload of Google Maps, Gmail, and Blogger mobile applications. The first of these handsets are expected to hit in Q2. So yeah, it's not the Google phone we've all been expecting hoping for, but with 18 R&D projects in the Google labs, we don't expect this to be the final word on the subject.

SHL’s CardioSen’C transmits ECG results to your physician

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 10:30 pm

There's a growing number of devices that not only monitor one's health, but can also transmit pertinent information back to remote caregivers, but SHL Telemedicine's latest gizmo takes things a step further by beaming your ECG results directly to your physician's mobile phone. The oddly-named CardioSen'C is a portable heart-monitoring system that gathers information from twelve electrodes strapped to one's chest and upper body, and once activated, transmits the results of the electrocardiograph instantly to a user-selected handset. Unlike similar systems already available in the US, SHL's iteration will be aimed at the Israel / European markets initially, and while we aren't exactly sure how much coinage such an advanced machine will cost to wear, you should probably make sure your insurance covers spontaneous service calls before you start lighting your doc's handset up with ECG results.

Honestech MY-IPTV kit streams TV to your handset / PDA

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 9:40 pm

Considering the vast amount of WiMAX / 4G talk that's been circulating at CTIA, it's about time we saw a manufacturer stepping up and giving us one more reason to pay attention. Breaking into Sling's stomping ground, Honestech's MY-IPTV kit consists of a USB 2.0 TV tuner and a piece of software that enables your 3G smartphone or WiFi-connected handset / PDA to watch live television and change the channels remotely. Additionally, users can access their television streams on any internet-connected lappie whilst pretending to pay attention in quarterly meetings, and for devices with enough computing power (and storage space), PVR capabilities are available. As expected, the kit will play nice with Windows XP and Windows Mobile operating systems, and it should be available real soon for $99.99 to $149.99 depending on extras.

Samsung Ubicell base station to extend in-home CDMA coverage

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 7:50 pm

Intel's not the only chap on the block loosing long range connectivity options on the world at CTIA, as Samsung is apparently aiming for the consumer market with its forthcoming Ubicell base station. While details are scarce at the moment, we do know that this "micromini BTS" will provide CDMA 1x services in the home by "enlarging the coverage area to shadow areas by connecting with DSL / cable modems." Essentially, this unit will help folks who live on the fringe of service areas to ditch their landline and finally enjoy the full benefits of their cellphone service. And while we're not entirely inclined to believe it, Samsung also states that its new creation will actually provide voice quality that's superior to VoIP. Nevertheless, we're still not sure when the Ubicell is expected to land, but those yearning to cut the cord on their landline can start sharpening the scissors.

iPhone shown off at CTIA — by AT&T COO

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ryan Block @ 6:28 pm

Hey, hey, iPhone fans, guess what. The iPhone is like, totally here at CTIA. The bad news? It's not exactly tethered to a display case or even enclosed in glass as it was at MWSF -- it was dutifully and briefly whipped out by AT&T COO Randall Stephenson, who showed an iPhone demo video and let everybody know AT&T had received over a million customer inquiries regarding the device. How many of those will transform into sales we don't know, but damned if they don't have peoples' attention.

Oh, by the way, we’re live from CTIA

Screw Disneyworld -- we're in the land of sun 'n fun for one reason, and one reason only: CTIA Wireless 2007. In terms of floor space and fanfare, CTIA's big event in the spring packs just a little more punch than its fall counterpart -- all the heavy hitters are out to play, but hot on the heels of CES, 3GSM, and CeBIT, major announcements are a bit on the light side. Far be it from that to deter us, of course; we're still determined to rock this house, so expect a never-ending torrent of coverage until the show's begging for mercy. Head on over to Engadget Mobile to make sure you don't miss a thing.
