Sony unveils black P!nk-branded MS-A512A M2 memory card

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 2:43 pm

Topping off a month full of pink gadgetry - with most items proudly supporting breast cancer research -- is Sony's own P!nk Memory Stick Micro. Contrary to popular assumption, this 512MB M2 card is actually black, but similar to its P!nk-branded PSP, is stuffed in pink colored packaging fit for a pop star, and also touts compatibility with the K790i / K800i, M600i, K610i, Z530i, Z550i and W300i Sony Ericsson mobiles. It comes bundled with a MS PRO adapter for use in one of your many flash card readers, and also sports a pre-loaded MPEG4 video interview of the artist as well as a DRM-free (albeit shortened) MP3 of "Stupid Girls." Should you just so happen to be a rabid P!nk fan, or just need a clever excuse to purchase an M2 card, the "special edition" MS-A512A should hit stores in November for an undisclosed price.

Cingular launches 3G-enabled 8525, sort of

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 2:08 pm

It's still forwarding us back to the old-skool 8125's product page at the moment, but a tipster has managed to coax Cingular's site into giving up the goods on the 8525 -- Buy Now link and all. We're guessing it has something to do with region or Premier account status, we're not sure, but the point is that a select few are able to place their orders for Cingular's first HSDPA smartphone as we speak. Breaking out the wallet might be hard to justify for folks in 2G areas coming from an 8125, but if speed and power are top priorities, lick your chops as you read the full specs (highlights include a 400MHz Samsung core, 2-megapixel cam, and that fabulous 3G radio) after the break.

[Thanks, John]

Update: Judging from commenters' experiences, it's sounding like there's some buffoonery going on behind the scenes over at Cingular HQ -- the phone may not be shipping to anyone yet after all. In the meanwhile, enjoy the literature and imagery we've scooped, and we'll let you know what's going on as soon as we do.

E-TEN glofiish X500 smartphone gets official

Filed under: Uncategorized — Paul Miller @ 11:02 am

While its hard to take a Pocket PC phone seriously that goes by the name of "glofiish," and even harder to take it seriously when it ain't got no 3G data, we're still fairly impressed with E-TEN's new X500 phone. The glofiish X500 packs in SiRF Star III GPS, Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g WiFi, and an EDGE radio all into a 0.6-inch thick form factor. While it was at it, E-TEN stuff in a 2 megapixel camera, 2.8-inch QVGA screen, 400MHz Samsung processor, 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM and a microSD slot. No surprises, since we spotted this thing a few weeks ago, but now it's getting "official," with an expected November launch and that silly glofiish moniker. Still no word on price.

Verizon launches Motorola’s KRZR K1m and LG’s Chocolate, again

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 8:52 am

Filed under:

Just in time for Halloween, VZW has new flavors of the MOTOKRZR K1m and Chocolate phones up for grabs. Well kinda, since their new White Chocolate only appears on what looks to be a Verizon staging site at the mo' with actual launch still expected tomorrow for $130 and a 2 year commitment. Just don't forget to treat yourself to a speakerphone with the ol' firmware trick hear, 'cause it looks from the site to ship without. Also up is the return on the K1m KRZR only now in a ghostly white with gray exterior -- yours to ship home for $200 after on-line discount and two-year contractual obligation akin to a feast of apples and rzrbldz.

Sony Ericsson’s MBW-100 Bluetooth watch reviewed

The concept of a watch that does anything more than just display the time and date has so far been a commercially unsuccessful one. Plenty have tried to make gadget phones that people actually want to wear, but all have failed. The most recent attempt to do a gadget watch properly is Sony Ericsson and Fossil's MBW-100 Bluetooth watch, which PC Magazine recently reviewed. Rather than going all out and designing a watch with full PDA functions, the partner companies decided to design a watch that could display simple information -- caller ID, text messages -- sent to it from a Bluetooth enabled phone. It's this "watch first, gadget second" approach that gives the MBW-100 immediate appeal to non-geeks, but unfortunately this particular watch isn't going to usher in a new era where everyone wears such a device. The MBW-100 is too expensive ($399), too limited (it currently only works with Sony Ericsson phones), and is too bulky for mainstream appeal (men with skinny wrists need not apply), although it's the closest that anyone has come to successfully integrating gadget functions into a wrist watch without sacrificing style and the whole displaying-the-time thing. Hopefully future iterations will really get it right: watch this space for more.

Palm Treo 680 and Cingular 8525 price and release!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ryan Block @ 5:34 am

Filed under:

Ah yes, this is what we've been so eagerly awaiting. Enough pussyfooting around with the Palm Treo 680 and HTC Hermes / 8525 coming to Cingular -- we know they're due. We need prices, we need dates. And according to what appears to be a recent Cingular marketing presentation, we've got 'em:
  • Treo 680: $424.99 straight, $349.99 one year, $249.99 one year with unlimited data (and $100 rebate), $274.99 two year, $174.99 two year with unlimited data (and $100 rebate; their ad, however, shows a $200 list price, but it's good to know we can count on around two Benjamins. Expect it November 5th (tentative).
  • Cingular 8525: $559.99 straight, $484.99 one year (not including $50 rebate if included with unlimited data), $409.99 two year (also not including that same rebate); expect it October 29th.
See, now that wasn't so bad, was it? Both came in right around where we'd expected and hoped; between the Dash, the Q, and the 680, it looks like that $200 price point is the sweet spot for ever-slimming smartphones. And the 8525 ain't too bad either, considering what you're getting.

The SLVR, refined: Motorola’s L7e

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 5:55 pm

Filed under:

With all the facelifting, refinement, and replacement Motorola's RAZR lineup has gotten as of late, one might think the poor, overlooked SLVR series was in danger of going the way of the dinosaurs (or, perhaps more appropriately, the MPx). Actually, readers following The Boy Genius Report have known that Moto has been slaving over a hot stove chock full o' the thin candybars in a variety of flavors for a little while now, and it just so happens that the updated L7 we'd scooped -- identified back then as the L7i -- has gone on to officially become the SLVR L7e. Visually, the re-upped model is nearly a dead ringer for its pappy, save for the keypad which has taken on a decidedly RIZR-esque appearance and a "shimmering blue" hue. The microSD slot is a carryover from the L7, but virtually every other major spec has been tweaked: the cam goes from VGA to 1.3-megapixel, A2DP is now supported for wireless stereo, and the GSM radio mercifully adds EDGE for decent 2.5G data. Word has it no American carrier has expressed interest in the updated model, but thanks to support for both the 850 and 1900MHz bands, this is one phone that should be a breeze to import and use when it drops by year's end.

AT&T lets you spy on your own home, remotely

Filed under: Uncategorized — Cyrus Farivar @ 6:40 am

AT&T has just announced a home monitoring service so that you can spy on your kids / housemates / spouse / pets while you're out and about in the wider world. For a one-time fee of $200, AT&T will sell you an "equipment package" that contains a tilt-and-pan video camera, a motion sensor for a door / window, a "central router" to connect those devices to the interweb, and "two power modules that enable device connectivity via home power outlets." (And shipping you all that to your door will cost you another Hamilton, don't forget.) Further, as you might expect, you can program various alerts or triggers (like turning on a light) if motion is detected. So for all of that (which will still cost you $10 per month to operate), how do you view pictures of people trying to do damage to your domicile? Well, the system transmits over the internet at 3-7fps or if you're viewing it on your Cingular handset, between a paltry 1fps or up to a smokin' 3fps (if you have HSDPA). However, The Associated Press provides one last caveat, though: "The system won't work if the power fails." Thanks, Sherlock.

Apple updates patent for touchscreen device

Filed under: Uncategorized — Cyrus Farivar @ 12:28 am

Remember that Apple patent that we eyed back in early September? You know, the one that patented the merging of various electronic devices into a single gadget? Well, it's back and better than ever before -- it's an update to U.S. patent application Serial No. 11/367,749, and is entitled "Multi-Functional Hand-Held Device." So how's this patent different from the last time? It's not, really, but it provides a fair bit more detail written in that cryptic legalistic prose that we've come to know and love; it describes and displays the new interface, which may include various triggers along the edge of the bezel: "By way of example, the visual guides 180 in FIG. 4 include 'Menu,' 'Power,' 'Left,' 'Select,' 'Right,' etc. It will be appreciated that the visual guides 180 and their arrangement depicted in FIG. 4 are only exemplary. More or fewer visual guides 180 may be provided, and the size of the visual guides 180 can be larger or smaller than the scale depicted in FIG. 4." Further, there's a new portrait and landscape option described, handy for viewing photos or watching episodes of "Lost" while on the bus. But even the music-playing core of the iPod will get a makeover, coming in with an on-screen time slider, volume control, and other options that seem to be user-defined and customizable. We've still got questions as we did last time concerning prior art, but perhaps these newer details fill in the gaps. All in all, it would appear that the true video iPod (with possible cell phone or GPS add-ons) is still on the drawing board at this point, and it remains to be seen how these illustrations translate into reality. We've got some more patent diagrams of that portrait/landscape view and of the new "now playing" interface on the flip side, hot off the patent filing presses.
